How To Get Browsers To Leave Their Contact Details

SYNOPSIS: Use e-mail marketing to maximise your profits. (That’s a huge understatement. This article contains the single most important marketing action your company can take this year!)

Here’s something that may shock you about British websites - on average only 1% of visitors leave their contact details. This means that only a tiny fraction of visitors become paying customers on the average UK website. To give you some idea of just how disastrous that can be imagine you own a shop and 99% of your visitors left without buying anything. I think you’d agree that you’d be putting up “Closing Down Sale” banners before too long!

Isn't it strange then that we seem to be leaving so much money on the table when our websites could be a goldmine if we used effective marketing techniques? The good news is there are lots of approaches that cost almost nothing which you can apply to your website to skyrocket your profits. Here's a very peculiar but incredibly effective approach -- give something away for FREE on your website.

The next obvious question is "what can I give away which isn't going to cost me anything?" And the answer is, information. Don't forget that you are an expert in your field after all you know far more about your product or service than your customers do! Here are a few examples of the kind of report you could write:

If you're a plumber, write the "7 Tips for a Leak Free Home". Or if you are an estate agent "10 Ways to the Perfect Home Sale". Or, “The 7 Secrets Our Competitors Don't Want You to Know". You get the idea!

It doesn't need to be War and Peace, just a couple of pages of useful information written in a personal but direct way.

So, how can you use your free report to capture your visitors' e-mail addresses? There's no way of you doing this without your visitor volunteering the information so all you need to do is offer your report in exchange for their contact details. The best place to do this is on your website's homepage. There you place, in a prominent position, a link to a free report which your visitor can click on. That takes them to a 'registration' page where they fill in their details. Upon completing the form an e-mail is sent to the visitor with the report in and another is sent to you with their contact details in. (The whole process should take your web designers no more than 1 hour to set up.)

The great thing about this approach is that once you have their e-mail address you also have their permission to continue marketing to them. The average statistics from this technique demonstrate an increase in sales leads from 1% to 12%-15%. Now, isn't increasing your website's profits by 15 times worth doing?
