Use Alexa to Learn From Your Competition

SYNOPSIS: Use Alexa’™s comparative ranking tool to identify the success stories amongst your competition, learn what they are doing and emulate or improve on it.

Here's a useful little link for you to follow up: www.alexa.com. If you click on "traffic rankings" and type in your domain name you can see how well your website is performing in relation to the rest of the Internet for your chosen country.

Apart from the obvious narcissistic fun of looking up your own ranking there is a far more useful facility to be had in looking up the rankings of your competitors. The key part of the site is the ability to make comparisons between websites so you can determine how your site is performing in relation to others (look at some small boxes underneath the graph).

What's this simple tool does is help you pick out the success stories amongst your competition. If you can identify that one of your competitors is doing significantly better on the web than you home in on their site and learn what they are doing differently to you.

Now I do appreciate that if you are a software development house it would be pretty useless comparing yourself with Microsoft. However, the way to level the playing field in your analysis is to choose competitors who are either your size or slightly larger.

Competitor analysis is one of the most significant aspects of improving your marketing and yet it is very rarely undertaken. So, take two minutes to step outside your business's bubble and see what ideas your competition has had which is making their web performance better than yours.
